The official public opening of the 20th Deal (Aylesham) Cornwallis Scout Group took place on Thursday 7th December 2017 from 7pm – 8.30pm at Bechange Community Hub in Aylesham during the normal weekly cub pack meeting.
Guests were welcomed with drinks and refreshments in the conference room and Alan Noake, District Commissioner for Deal, Walmer, Sandwich & District Scouts gave a brief presentation about the new group and Scouting in general.
In the main hall the new cub pack then gave a demonstration of one of their favourite activities - the ship to shore game - after which they performed a traditional "Grand Howl" ceremony. Then all the new cubs made their Scout promise and were formally invested into the group.
The new leaders and cubs were all presented with their newly designed group neckerchiefs - orange (for the pit workers overalls) with a black stipe (seam of coal) and a green stripe (representing the countryside and the future).
Cllr Sue Chandler the Chairman of Dover District Council and Dave Pearson representing the East Kent Freemasons unveiled the group’s commemorative brass plaque (professionally engraved by Keith Raes Engraver of Sandwich) and thanked all of the adults who had worked hard behind the scenes to launch the new group for Aylesham.
The new group is to be called the "20th Deal (Aylesham) Cornwallis Scout Group". It has been called 20th Deal because there is archive evidence of there having been at least 19 other previous Scout groups over the years in Deal, Walmer, Sandwich & District. Plus the 'Cornwallis' has been added to the name to formally recognise the kind sponsorship of the Cornwallis East Kent Freemasons' Charity.
Meetings take place every Thursday evening starting up to Thursday 21st December 2017 and will resume in the new year starting Thursday 11th January. Beavers (6-8 year olds) runs from 5.15pm to 6.30pm and cubs (8 - 11 year olds) is from 6.45pm – 8.15pm. The meetings are held at the Bechange Community Hub Ackholt Road, Aylesham, Kent CT3 3AJ. If you are interested in helping with the group, or if your child wants to come along, please contact District Commissioner Alan Noake for more information by email on firstname.lastname@example.org or mobile 07525 633435.
